Does Base Have a Native Token?
No. Base has no native token and Coinbase has never announced one. Gas fees on Base are paid in ETH. Any token called "BASE" offered in an airdrop or claim site is an unrelated third-party token, and the vast majority are scams designed to drain wallets through a fake approval step.

Why people keep expecting one
The assumption is understandable. Other major Layer 2s launched tokens — Arbitrum has ARB, Optimism has OP. People who bridged to Base early half-expect a retroactive reward. Three years on, it has not happened, and the reason is structural rather than secretive: Base is built by Coinbase, a publicly traded company with a live revenue model (exchange fees, subscriptions). It does not need a token to fund the chain the way a standalone foundation does, and issuing one would create securities complications a public company would rather avoid.

The "BASE token" scam pattern
Because demand exists, scammers supply it. The standard playbook: a token literally tickered "BASE" gets deployed, paired with a little ETH on a DEX so it shows a price, and promoted through replies and direct messages. Claim sites ask you to connect a wallet and approve a contract — that approval is the actual payload, and it lets the contract pull your valuable tokens. Before interacting with any token claiming to be official, paste its contract into Basescan and check it against the verification steps in the Basescan guide. If there were ever an official token, Coinbase and the official Base documentation would announce it — not a random X account.
