Can You Use Base Without a Coinbase Account?
Yes. Base is a public, permissionless blockchain — a Coinbase account is not required to use it, build on it, or hold funds on it. Any EVM wallet (MetaMask, Rabby, Trust Wallet) works, and you can get assets onto Base by bridging from Ethereum or another L2, or by withdrawing on the Base network from non-Coinbase exchanges such as Binance or Bybit.
- ✓Base is permissionless — no Coinbase account or KYC is involved at the network level
- ✓Any EVM wallet works: MetaMask, Rabby, Trust, and others
- ✓Fund it by bridging, or withdraw from any exchange that supports Base withdrawals
- ✓Coinbase the exchange and Base the network are separate products
Where the confusion comes from
Coinbase built Base and integrates it one tap away for roughly a hundred million exchange users, so newcomers reasonably assume the two are fused. They are not. Once the network is running, it is just infrastructure — the same way a company can build a public road and then not be able to demand ID from everyone who drives on it. Your funds on Base sit in your own wallet, and Coinbase cannot see or freeze self-custodial activity. The limits of that relationship, including the sequencer caveat, are laid out in the Base overview.
How to get onto Base with no Coinbase account
Three ordinary routes. Add Base to MetaMask manually (the setup steps take about two minutes), then bridge ETH from mainnet or another chain — routes compared in the bridging guide. Or withdraw directly from another exchange that supports Base network withdrawals; Binance's flow is documented in the Binance-to-Base walkthrough, and Bybit, OKX, and Kraken offer similar one-tap withdrawals. Or move from another L2 directly, skipping mainnet entirely — the Base-Arbitrum route shows how cheap that is.
