The two route families

Getting to Unichain looks like every other rollup bridge decision, with one important nuance: because Unichain is in the OP Superchain, the "official" route is genuinely canonical and trust-minimized — and genuinely slow for L1 exits, while third-party intent bridges are seconds fast. Here is the honest trade-off:

One thing people get wrong: the seven-day wait applies to moving assets back to Ethereum L1, not into Unichain. Deposits and L2-to-L2 Superchain transfers are fast in both directions.

Route A: the official Superchain bridge

The official bridge lives at bridge.unichain.org. Assets go through the same canonical bridge contracts as Base and Optimism use, with no percentage fee and no spread — you pay only the source-chain gas. Deposits from Ethereum typically land within minutes; moving between Superchain members is quicker still because the shared messaging layer avoids external liquidity entirely.

The official route earns its keep on large transfers. On a $50,000 bridge, even a 0.1% fast-bridge fee is $50 for a service you arguably don't need; on-chain custody through canonical contracts is worth the few minutes. Just remember the reverse direction: funds withdrawn from Unichain back to mainnet sit through the optimistic challenge window of about seven days before they're claimable, exactly like the official bridges on Base and Optimism — plan liquidity accordingly.

Route B: fast intent bridges

Intent-based bridges flip the order of operations. Instead of your funds making the whole journey first, you sign an intent ("I want X on Unichain"), a relayer fills it immediately from its own balance sheet, and the protocol settles with the relayer afterward. On L2-to-L2 routes the fill commonly lands in roughly two seconds — genuinely faster than most wallets can refresh. On mainnet-sourced fills allow a few minutes.

What you receive matters: canonical ETH and canonical USDC, not a wrapped representation you have to swap back. Fees sit around 0.05-0.15% depending on route size and liquidity conditions, with small minimums on tiny transfers. Bridging from Base or Arbitrum directly

If funds sit on another L2, don't route through mainnet — that would pay mainnet-scale fees for no reason. Fast bridges support Base, Arbitrum, and Optimism as direct sources to Unichain, so the whole trip stays at L2 fee levels end to end: source L2 gas plus the bridge fee, with seconds-to-minutes fills. A practical sequencing tip: bridge ETH first even if your goal is to trade with USDC. ETH on Unichain is both your trading asset and your gas balance; arriving with USDC but no ETH means a second bridge trip before you can make a single swap. $10-20 of ETH covers months of fees — the gas reserve math shows the receipts.
